New Lacquers

Page history last edited by pbworks 7 years, 11 months ago

New lacquers (aka acetates) are the best sounding of all possible cutting surfaces.  They are still manufactured by Apollo Masters in Banning, CA.  (www.apollomasters.com). They are comprised of a nitrocellulose compound on top of an aluminum disc core.

Sizes:
Lacquers come in 4 sizes, and several webmail types. 14" (used for mastering 12" records), 12" (mastering 10" records), 10" (used for mastering 7" records), and 7" records, used exclusively for making one-off "dub plates".  A lacquer one size larger than the final product is needed due to the requirements of the plating process.

Types:
Masters - These are lacquers which will be used for professional mastering.  They have one center hole, and are the most expensive due to rigorous quality control.

Dubs - These are lacquers which will not be used for mastering.  They are marketed as recording blanks for one-off recordings.  These are often masters which had a small cosmetic defect that would not effect cutting, but was unsuitable for use as a master.  These have a second "drive pin" hole, which allows them to be cut on most lathes, including home suitcase cutters. From Apollo: "2-hole dubs are manufactured with the same exacting standards as our Masters but may contain cosmetic blemishes not affecting the cutting performance."
Reference Lite - One hole lacquers that are lighter weight and have a thicker layer of coating so that grooves can be cut extra deep for DJ use.

From Apollo: "Near vinyl record weight makes these masters easy to handle while still delivering the legendary quality expected from Apollo.  Whether cutting extra heavy for scratching, or that special cut for the audiophile, our thicker coating of lacquer will be sure to deliver the performance desire. Disc jockeys love these discs because they are light weight making them easier to carry and easier to scratch. AudioDisc LiteReference Series™ are available in 7 and 12 inch sizes. 7 inch discs are available with large or small holes."
