Vacuum Setup

Page history last edited by pbworks 8 years ago

In order to keep webmail the cut contents of the groove (aka swarf or chip) from wrapping around the stylus and ruining the cut, it is necessary to build a vacuum system. This involves several pieces:
1) Vacuum - any Shop Vac or handheld vacuum will work, preferably on a variac to lower power, which in turn lowers the volume of the noise.
2) Swarf Jar - A jar that has input and output nozzles.  The input nozzle runs to the swarf nozzle, the output runs to the vacuum, but has a screen which prevents the extremely flammable lacquer swarf from building up inside the vacuum, where it could ignite and cause a fire.

3) Swarf nozzle - The best placement for the swarf nozzle is hanging behind the stylus, where the swarf can be pulled directly from the needle.  Traditionally they have also been placed in front of the stylus, hanging slightly towards the center of the record, on the cutter head carriage. It is connected to the swarf jar by rubber tubing. Some clear plastic tubing can build up static electricity and get clogged.
